Position: Data Science and Applied Mathematics Intern

Location: Louisville, KY

Status: Internship (Part-Time)

Job Description: River Road’s Data Science and Applied Mathematics Internship provides candidates real world experience to impact how the firm uses large scale data to make decisions. The chosen candidate will work side by side with skilled professionals focused on the design, development and execution of new data exploration tools to enhance the firm’s analysis functions. Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with teammates on a wide variety of projects to improve the effectiveness of business decisions through the use of data and predictive modeling
  • Works with teammates to ensure project objectives are established and met
  • Uses and learns a wide variety of tools and languages to achieve results (e.g. SAS, Python, Visual Basic)
  • Communicates findings to team and leadership to ensure models are well understood and incorporated into business processes

Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. candidate or graduate student in a quantitative field (e.g. Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, Economics)
  • Demonstrated intermediate coding experience in at least one language
  • Both creative, and focused to solve coding tasks under entrepreneurial conditions
  • High level of intellectual curiosity – wants to know “how things work” and demonstrates those behaviors to research and answer one’s own questions
  • Strong quantitative skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written form
  • Well-organized and detail-oriented
  • Hard-working, diligent, and eager to learn in an intellectual, collaborative environment
  • Strong GPA and SAT/ACT/GRE scores

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates should show rigorous academic preparation in their field of study and, ideally, also have strong cross disciplinary performance outside their chosen field such the humanities, history and philosophy
  • Appreciation and interest in capital markets is a big plus
  • Strong command of probability and statistics
  • Linear and non-linear programming skills and related optimization techniques
  • Experience in SAS or Python preferred, but not required
